Why This Wine?

One of my favorite parts of opening Fisk has been learning from people who know more than I do. And sometimes that's not necessarily about the wines, but about the industry as a whole, trends, and other buyers in the area.


We discovered Honoro Vera through our former RNDC wine representative, Emma Wallace. One thing I loved about Emma was that she was fairly new to wine and unapologetically humble and honest. She didn't have a lot of experience herself with Old World wines, but she worked with an impressive catalog and a wide variety of wine buyers and was paying attention. Emma also had a knack for finding bottles that seriously overperformed their price, and this was one of them.


If Beronia was one of my first introductions to Rioja, Honoro Vera reminded me why people talk so much about Spanish wine values.


This isn't a flashy, trophy bottle. It's simply a really enjoyable Rioja that drinks well above its price. These are some of my favorite discoveries.


What to Look For

If you enjoyed Beronia, think of Honoro Vera as its more casual cousin.


Look for blackberry, black cherry, ripe plum, subtle vanilla, baking spice, and smooth tannins. It has enough dark fruit and structure to feel familiar to California Cabernet drinkers, while the brighter acidity keeps it fresh and incredibly food-friendly.


I still think Beronia is the more structured and oak-driven of the two, but Honoro Vera is wonderfully approachable and an easy bottle to open any night of the week.


Something I Learned

At first, I assumed Honoro Vera was simply another wine made by Juan Gil.

It turns out the story is much more interesting.

The Gil family has gradually expanded into several of Spain's great wine regions, with a different winery dedicated to each one. Their Rioja winery is called Bodegas Rosario Vera, named after the family's matriarch. Honoro Vera was the winery's very first Rioja—a tribute to the family's roots and the people who helped build one of Spain's most respected wine families.

One line from the winery especially stuck with me. They describe these wines as celebrating "the happiness of a table with all the sons and grandsons near the mother."

I love that image.

It reminds me that the best bottles aren't really about tasting notes or scores. They're about gathering people around a table, sharing a meal, and lingering a little longer than you planned.

Pair With

Pizza, burgers, grilled chicken, tacos, charcuterie, Manchego, roasted vegetables, pasta with tomato sauce, or just a Tuesday night that could use a little improvement.

At Fisk, I'd happily pair it with our Pepperoni & Hot Honey Flatbread or one of our charcuterie boards.
