At a Glance

Producer: Delaforce

Region: Douro DOC, Portugal

Grape: 100% Alvarinho

Alcohol: 13.2%

What to Look For

Think citrus, green apple, white peach, and a little salty minerality. It's crisp, bright, and clean from the first sip to the last.

Pair With

Grilled fish, shrimp, oysters, mussels, goat cheese, or a simple summer salad.

Why This Wine?

Portugal is new territory for me, so this bottle felt like a good place to start.

I knew Alvarinho was Portugal's version of Albariño. Beyond that, I had a lot to learn.

I expected to enjoy it. I didn't expect my glass to be empty quite so quickly.

Something I Learned

One of our favorite regulars, Dr. Martha Kelly, mentioned Portugal's Vinho Verde region to me at our last wine tasting. As I started reading about Alvarinho, I learned that's the region most people associate with the grape. So I was surprised to find this bottle comes from the Douro instead.

Until this week, I knew the Douro as the home of Port wine. I was excited to learn that it also produces white wines like this.

What Other People Are Tasting

James Suckling – 91 Points (2019 vintage)White and green fruit, oyster shell minerality, and a vibrant finish.
